SAM VOKEY: Fall Workshop

  • Newburyport MA United States of America (map)

I will be teaching a Fall Workshop September 25, 26 and 27 with 28 as a rain date — let me know if you are interested because the last one filled fast. This is a 3-day landscape painting workshop but please try to keep all 4 days open in case of bad weather. We usually meet at 8:00 AM.

Goals of the workshop: Work on at least 3 paintings with guided instruction along the way. Painting landscapes in this way, over consecutive days, will help you to produce your best work to date.

Structure of the workshop: I will paint a demo on the first morning so that all of you will be able to see how I approach laying in a landscape as well as answer questions as I paint. I have learned a lot from watching other artists at work and I think you will find it helpful. After my demo we will take a break for lunch then each of you will set up and work on your own paintings as I give helpful instruction as you go along. If students are eager, we can extend the day and I can do a sunset demo or you can paint your own after a quick break.

The second day on a painting is exciting because its usually where you start to see real progress! Everything is pretty much in the correct place so now we are getting the values right and paying attention to color. We will break for lunch again and then you will work on your afternoon paintings while I work as your painting coach, giving you tips and strategy to pull off a winning painting! The third day will be more of the same, working on the paintings from previous days if the weather and light are similar or starting new ones if necessary. The third day is usually about how to manage edges and paint handling.

Location of the workshop: A marsh in Newburyport. If you look at the New Paintings Page or Archives Page of my site you’ll see that I paint a lot of marshes. I will post the specific location and directions later.

Lodging: If you are coming from far away and need help with lodging ideas please let me know.

Cost of 3 day workshop: The cost is $300 for the 3 days. This cost includes the demos and hands-on instruction as you paint for all three days. I ask for half in advance to hold your place and the rest when you arrive.

If you have any questions please call me at 617–285-8313.

Please send checks to hold your place or use PayPal samvokey@gmail.com
