David Curtis was born in Brookline, MA, in 1950; his father Roger Curtis, a painter and also a member of the Guild of Boston Artists, introduced him to painting at a young age. Along with being a student at Gloucester High School, David was also taking art classes from his uncle Howard Curtis, and attended weekend classes at Massachusetts College of Art. Upon graduation from high school, he spent the summer of 1968 studying at the Boston Museum School and the following autumn he attended the Vesper George School of Art, where he studied with Robert Douglas Hunter. In January 1969, he started studying under R.H. Ives Gammell, a second-generation teacher of the Boston School, and continued until June 1971, then returned to Gammell in 1974 and stayed until 1975.
David is a member of the Guild of Boston Artists, the North Shore Arts Association, the Rockport Art Association, as well as the Meriden Art Association and has also exhibited at the Hammer Galleries in New York. He has won numerous awards for his work including the Rockport Art Association New Members Prize; the A.T. Hibbard Memorial Award for Landscape; the American Artists Professional League Award; the Meriden Arts Association Award; and the Annisquam Art Center Award.
